Scripture: Philippians 2:5-8

Good morning EC family! Can you believe we’re already just a few days away from Palm Sunday? As we enter week 6 of Lent, we begin to prepare for Palm Sunday, the beginning of Holy Week. This is a time to reflect on Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, where crowds waved palm branches and shouted, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” (Matthew 21:9). Yet, amidst the celebration, Jesus’ humility shines through. He didn’t come as a conquering king on a warhorse; He came as a servant on a donkey.

This week’s passage in Philippians 2:5-8 shows us Jesus’ radical humility: “In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant…”

Let’s explore what it means to follow Christ’s example of humility and service.

What Does It Mean to Be Humble?

Humility is not thinking less of yourself; it’s thinking of yourself less. It’s about putting others first and recognizing that everything we have comes from God. Jesus modeled this perfectly. Though He was God, He didn’t cling to His divine privileges. Instead, He emptied Himself, became a servant, and gave His life for us.

Why Is Humility Important During Lent?

Lent is a season of self-examination and repentance, and humility is at the heart of both. It’s about acknowledging our need for God and recognizing that we are not the center of the universe. Humility also prepares us to receive God’s grace. As James 4:6 says, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”

Practical Steps for Embracing Humility

Here are some practical ways to cultivate humility in your life:

  1. Serve Others: Look for opportunities to serve those around you, whether it’s at home, work, or in your community.
  2. Practice Gratitude: Thank God daily for His blessings and acknowledge that everything you have comes from Him.
  3. Listen More, Speak Less: Be quick to listen and slow to speak (James 1:19). Show genuine interest in others’ perspectives.
  4. Admit Your Mistakes: When you’re wrong, apologize and seek forgiveness.
  5. Reflect on Christ’s Example: Spend time meditating on Philippians 2:5-8 and ask God to help you embody Christ’s humility.

Jesus Washing the Disciples’ Feet

One of the most powerful examples of Jesus’ humility is found in John 13:1-17, where He washes His disciples’ feet. This was a task typically reserved for the lowest servant, yet Jesus, the King of kings, took on this role to show His disciples what true humility looks like. Afterward, He said, “I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you” (John 13:15). This story challenges us to serve others with the same humility and love.

As Christians, we are called to be salt and light in the world (Matthew 5:13-16). This means living differently, putting others first, serving with love, and pointing people to Christ through our actions.

Be Encouraged

Humility is not weakness; it’s strength under control. It’s about trusting God enough to let go of our need for recognition and control. Philippians 2:9-11 reminds us that because of Jesus’ humility, God exalted Him to the highest place. In the same way, when we humble ourselves, God lifts us up in His timing and for His glory.

A Question to Reflect On: In what areas of your life do you struggle with pride, and how can you practice humility instead?

Let Us Pray: Lord, help me to have the same mindset as Christ Jesus. Teach me to humble myself and serve others with love. Amen.

Challenge: Perform an act of service for someone this week without expecting anything in return.

A Hymn towards Palm Sunday

As we reflect on Christ’s humility this week, I invite you to meditate on this classic Methodist Palm Sunday hymn:

🎵 “All glory, laud, and honor,
To Thee, Redeemer, King…”

This hymn has been sung by Methodists for generations as we remember Jesus’ humble entry into Jerusalem. Try:

  • Singing it as part of your personal devotions this week, focusing on the lyrics
  • Playing it as your family prepares for Holy Week
  • Joining us as we’ll sing it together this Sunday!

Be sure to attend our Wednesday Night Lenten Service at 5 p.m. even as we begin to prepare our hearts for the Holy Week. Let’s continue to grow together in faith and hope.

Until next time, may God’s peace and presence be with you.

Blessings
